& Coast – Scenic Tour
Mon 7th – Fri 11th June
5 days - £399
A region of unspoilt scenic beauty with huge expanses of untouched countryside and a spectacular coastline with impressive castles and little fishing villages which have created a heritage coast of outstanding natural beauty. Beautiful gardens and castles some of which we visit during this tour. (Unbeatable scenery Recommended by Dorothy)
Day 1 We leave Chelmsford at 7.00am depending on your local pick up point and travel northwards for a leisurely drive to our hotel just north of Newcastle stopping for refreshments during our journey.
Day 2 Today we drive the short distance to Alnwick to visit the magnificent Alnwick Castle & Gardens designed by the Duchess, the outstanding 12-acre gardens include the unique water feature, The Grand Cascade, that enables visitors to walk onto the cascade at many levels, the Rose Gardens with pergola walks and climbing roses, clematis and honeysuckle fill the air with heavenly scents, also topiary’s and sculptures. A lovely new Water Garden, and Poison Garden designed by the Duchess has been added since our last visit. Plus the fantastic Tree house built up in the air round a gigantic tree is a must for all. We have a combined ticket giving you entrance into the magnificent castle and gardens before free time in the town centre.
Day 3 We make our way up the delightful coast passing through Amble, Alnmouth, then a visit the seaside resort of Seahouses where you can watch the fishing vessels reel in their catch. From here we journey up the coast via Bamburgh Castle perched high on the hilltop. We stop here for a time to walk round the village and have a lunch stop, if the weather conditions are suitable and subject to the tide we can travel along the causeway to Lindisfarne (Holy Island) Home of Christianity founded by St Aidan and the monks.
Day 4 A lovely day as we make our way to the market town of Hexham an attractive old town aside the River Tyne with its market square and abbey, a short break here before travelling along the Roman Road past the fort of Chesters on Hadrian’s Wall before heading northwards through the pretty scenery of Kielder Forest and Kielder Water, one of Britain’s biggest nature reserves, home to the Red Squirrel, Deer and Rare Birds. Tucked away at the top of Northumbria close to the Scottish border, Kielder Water is the largest man made lake in Europe.
