Almabtrieb Festival in the Tyrol

This tour is to Austria to take part in one of the oldest traditions within the Alpine region, the yearly end of grazing season festivals when the farmers bring the cattle down from the high pastures and hold a colourful parade. Our tour includes this and another annual event, the Church and music festival in Kramsach, all you have to do is join in the fun and festivities. Our base is the village of Stans and the welcoming Schwarzbrunn Hotel.

Day 1 We depart early morning from you local pick up point to Dover for the short ferry crossing to Calais. We make our way through Belgium to Germany and our overnight hotel at the BW Hotel in Alzey.

Day 2 After breakfast we depart for Austria. Travelling through Germany we follow the Rhine towards Stuttgart and Munich before crossing the gentle Achenpass entering Austria to reach our holiday hotel late afternoon. Time to settle in with a welcome drink before dinner this evening.

Day 3 A restful free day in our resort, make use of the hotels excellent leisure facilities.

Day 4 Travel along the Inn Valley to the delightful village of Brixen for one of the most impressive Almabtrieb festival in the region: Hundreds of beautifully adorned cows walk through the village on their way down from the alpine pastures to their farms. Under bad weather conditions the programme may be modified.

Day 5 We drive to the village of Kramsach and the Museum of Tyrolean Farming. In this open-air museum we are able to visit 14 typical Tyrolean farmhouses. Then onto the pretty town of Rattenburg famous for its crystal and glass blowing before returning back to the hotel.

Day 6 A morning visit to the capital of the Tyrol, Innsbruck where we are joined by a local guide for a tour to view its principal sights before time at leisure for further exploration. This afternoon we include a cable car ride from the village of Alpbach, to the 2100m high peak of the Weidesberger Horn for magnificent views.

Day 7 We depart for our homeward journey. Crossing the Fern Pass and into Germany, travelling through Bavaria to the delightful historic city of Ulm, with its enormous cathedral, where we make a stop. This afternoon we cross the Rhine on our way back to our German overnight hotel the BW Hotel in Alzey.

Day 8 After a fine buffet breakfast we depart for the journey back to Calais for the short sea crossing to Dover. We return to our home area early evening.
